Background
Kielioppitreeniä edistyneille suomenoppijoille is a massive open online course (MOOC) developed by the University of Helsinki. This course is designed to teach advanced Finnish learners key linguistic principles such as verb conjugation, noun declension, past tense forms, and expressions of time. The course platform allows for the creation of distinct sections to clearly differentiate these concepts, with the option to include images for better visual engagement.
Illustrations
The initial request from the client was to avoid literal representations of the course content. Instead, they sought abstract illustrations, reflecting the complexity and abstract nature of language itself. Additionally, color was to be used as a visual tool to distinguish each section, helping learners remember which parts of the course they had completed.
Each illustration was crafted to evoke the mood or essence of its respective section, taking a highly intuitive and subjective approach. The use of geometric patterns symbolized the structure and rules of language, while the abstract nature kept the designs open to interpretation.
Key Learning Outcome
The most valuable takeaway from this project was learning to trust and follow my intuition throughout the creative process.
